STOREMEN AND PACKERS
INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE
The hearing of the Dominion storemen and packers' industrial dispute was commenced today before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. P. Hally, the applicants being the employees.
The employees asked for overtime at the rate of time and a half for the first four hours and double time thereafter. The employers offered time and a quarter for the first four hours, thereafter time and a half. There was dispute over the question of wages, the employees asking £4 15s for storemen and packers in charge of two or more men other than casuals, and £4 5s a week for other storemen and packers. The employers offered £4 Is 3d and £3 12s 9d respectively. Wages claimed by the employees for junior storemen and packers ranged from £1 iis for those under 17 years of ago to ■L.3 for those from 20 to 21 years of age. The employers' counter-claims offered 15s to £2. The employees demanded 2s Id per hour for casual workers as against the employers' ofTer of Is 9d.
The clauses in dispute are being dealt with this afternoon.
