OAMARU HARBOUR
BREAKWATER EXTENSION (By '.olograph—Press Association.) OAMARU, November 20. The Oamaru Harbour Board today accepted the tender of Downer and Co. (Dunedin), at £4493 7s, for raising the existing breakwater in concrete, and that of William Smith and Co. (Invercargill), £175 16s lOd, for the supply of hardwood sleepers. The breakwater work is to be completed in three months and a half. In both instances ten lenders were received, and the lowest was accepted. The highest tender for the breakwater raising was £11,742 10s. '
The board also decided to proceed with the extension of the breakwater for a. distance of 500 feet in a north-easterly direction from the present breakwater, for which £30.000 is available from the harbour improvements fund. An abundant supply of suitable stone has been made available at the board's quarry alongside the breakwater, and the work will be carried out without incurring a debt and without additional charge to ratepayers.
