from other clubs. On this occasion the challengers were the Wellington Club, represented by Mesdames Caldow and Henderson. The latter player was the first to get the strength of the green and in several turns, including a break of five, reached the rover. Mrs. Harper then took the play and soon reached two back with her partner's clip on the third hoop. At this stage the Hutt players shot into the opponent's play when Mrs. Caldow picked up a break going from two back to the peg, Mrs. Henderson finishing in the next turn, the score being 26-10. The next on the list of challenges is the Mt. Victoria Club, which will be represented by Miss Boyce and Mrs. Bradley, the match to be played on Monday at 1.30 p.m.. Mrs. Mouat will act as referee. • Association Ferns. The second round of the Ferns was played on the Island Bay lawns last Friday, when the holders, Mesdames j Dempsey and Beveridge defeated the ! challengers, Wellington Club, repre-' sented by Mrs. Thornton and Miss Clark, the score being 26-20. The lawns were very heavy, but despite this fact both Mrs. Dempsey and Mrs. Beveridge 1 made breaks of five, the long shooting of the latter being brilliant. At one stage of, the game the Island Bay players had an exceptionally good lead, but this was considerably reduced before the finish of the match. The next on the list of challengers is the Mt. Victoria Club. Miss Bates will act as referee. Mckenzie Cups. The second round for the Cups was played on the Hutt lawn last Monday, when the challengers, Wellington Club, represented by Mesdames Baker land Crosby, defeated the holders, Mrs. Stonehouse and Miss D. McKenzie, by the small margin of 2 points. The game was fairly even throughout, no one player making more than a few hoops at a time, and in the final stages all four clips were on the peg. The jlawn was heavy after the recent rain which prolonged the game to some extent. The next on the list of challengers is the Central Club. Mrs. Liddell will referee the match. Australian Team to Visit New Zealand. A paragraph (from the Melbourne "Argus" reads as follows:—"At a meeting yesterday of the council of the Victorian Croquet Association, the challenge received from England for Australia to send a team there in 1937 was accepted. The New Zealand challenge was accepted tentatively, provided that the Australian team visits New Zealand after having played in England. A sub-committee appointed to go into the matter of the tour consists of Mesdames Coghill, Roberts, Illingsworth, O'Toole, and Miss Morrison, with the president and the hon. treasurer ex officio." It is assumed from the above that the Australian team will travel to England, compete in the Macßobertson Shield contest, and probably other important events, and at the close of the English season leave for New Zealand, arriving before Christmas. It is unfortunate as the New Zealand lawns are generally fairly heavy at that time of the year and, moreover, players do not get a great deal of play before the New Year. The New Zealand Croquet Council is, however, awaiting a reply from Melbourne on the subject and should shortly know definitely the itinerary of the team. Wairarapa Tournament. After several days' delay on account of wet weather the Wairarapa championships are now reaching the final stages. The Greytown lawns had to be commissioned as well as both the Masterton greens. 1 The following are the results to date: — Open championship: Mrs. Nicholson beat Mrs. Donelly, 26-17; Mrs. Bassett beat Mrs. Poison, 26-19; Mrs. Fairbrother beat Mrs. Nicholson, 26-16; Mr. Hayden- beat Mrs. Poison, 26-24; Mr. Hayden beat Mr. T. Saunders, 26-17; Mrs. Rowles beat Mrs. Bryant, 26-20. Handicap doubles: T. Saunders and Lyford beat Mesdames Poison and Donelly. Level singles.—Mrs. Donelly beat Mrs. Jackson, 264; Miss Nix beat Mrs. McGregor, 26-19; Miss Nix beat Mrs. Sinclair, 26-11; Mrs. McGregor beat Mrs. Lyford, 26-23. Championship doubles: Mesdames Rowles and Fairbrother beat Mrs. Poison and Mr. Hayden, 26-20; Mrs. Barry and Miss ■ McKenzie beat Mesdames ! Bryant and Nicholson, 26-19; Mesdames Rowles and Fairbrother beat Mrs. Bassett and Mr. T. Saunders, 26-10; Mrs. Barry and Miss McKenzie beat Mesdames Donelly and Finlayson, 26-20. Finals won by Mrs. Barry and Miss McKenzie (Hataitai). Handicap singles: Mrs. McGregor beat Mrs. Sinclair. Baulking at Hoops. At the beginning of the season one constantly notices the frequency with [ which players balk at hoops. This is no doubt due to over-anxiety to make the point. The head, and often the shoulders also, are lifted in order to raise the eyes to follow the progress of the ball through the hoop, with the result that the mallet loses direction and a faulty stroke is made. In England it has been proved that the ideal way of correcting this fault is to practice taking the stance at a hoop, plac-j ing the mallet correctly against the ball and then making the stroke with, the eyes closed. The same remarks apply to shooting. More often that not faulty shots are clue to either lifting the head or the incorrect back swing of the mallet. One of the English players who visited our shores last season advocated a stop shot for every stroke, the theory being that the back swing was shorter and consequently truer. These stop shots have a disadvantage, however, at the hoops, where a more or less gentle stroke is required in order to coax the ball through, rather than to force. Wairarapa Inquiry. Rule 38 (c) refers to the striker's own ball and lias nothing whatever to do with pegging out the opponent's ball. As long as the opponent's ball is pegged out the striker is at liberty to peg his own out; he is also entitled to peg out one of his own balls provided his partner's ball is a rover. The rule makes no mention of the turn or any part of a turn. Personals. Miss S. Milen (Hataitai), who is at present in hospital, is making satisfactory progress. Miss Milen, who is one of the pioneer members of the club, is missed on the greens and her croquet friends wish her a speedy recovery. Miss D. Whiting Wellington) is on a visit to Waimate, where she will be staying for the next few weeks. Mrs. Sinclair, who has been taking part in the Wairarapa tournament, lias returned to Hawera. Mrs. Startup (Wellington) has been absent from the lawns for some time on account o£ ill health. Her club members hope that it will not be long before she will again be taking part in the games,
