MODEL ENGINEERING

WELLINGTON SOCIETY The seventh annual meeting of the Wellington Model Engineering Society was held on Tuesday, Mr. A. F. Brasch presiding over a large gathering of members. The annual report .showed that the society had continued to make steady progress during the year, while there had been a slight increase in membership. The numbers, however, left something to be desired and it was hoped that there would be a further ■ increase during the coming year. The society's exhibit at the Easter Show | was well up to the usual high standard [and plans were in hand for improvements for the next one. It was proposed to instal a workshop in the next exhibit so as to demonstrate how the models were made. Twp of the leading engineering firms had been approached and they had kindly consented to loan some of the necessary equipment. It is also hoped that improvements will be made to the speed-boat pond so that the boats can be run at greater speeds. Efforts had been made to secure a suitable pond from the City Council but so far without success, the report continued. It was to be regretted that Wellington is practically the only city which had not a model boating pond, as such a pond would be an asset to the city. Visits had been paid to places of engineering interest and more would be arranged during the coming year. Visits had been paid to the Palmerston North shows, where the society had been defeated in its competition with the Palmerston North Model Engineering Society for the Challenge Shield. During the year lecturettes had been given on various models and these would be continued during the coming year as well as various social activities.

The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Mr. R. V. Roberts; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. Kirkland, M. Leaman, N. D. Blair, W. Ridley; chairman, Mr. H. J. Williams; vice-chairman, Mr. R. Stent; honorary secretary, Mr. L. S. K. Murray; assistant honorary secretary, Mr. W. K. Dickie; treasurer, Mr. J. H. Skelley; committee, Messrs. T. J. Henry, R. Bell, J. Boyes, C. J. Morion, J. McAuley, E. Standidge.

Mr. Brasch gave a short talk on the construction of a model undortype engine. This was followed by supper, and the meeting concluded with a short motion picture display provided by Mr. J. H. Skelley.
