OBITUARY

MR. HENRY SEXTON Mr. Henry Sexton, who had lived in Wellington for 63 years, died on Tuesday, aged 87 years. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, where his father, who was in the Navy, was stationed. Mr. Sexton also joined the Navy and spent some years on the West Indies station and the South American station.

Coming to New Zealand in the early seventies, he later began business as a grocer and conducted a store on the corner of Kent Terrace and Buckle Street. He retired from active business 20 years ago. Mr. Sexton was a foundation member of the Newtown Bowling Club, and was at the time of his death the oldest member of the club. He was also an honorary member of the Waverley Bowling Club, Sydney. His wife, who was the daughter of one of the earliest New Zealand settlers, predeceased him some years ago. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. J. Langridge, and four granddaughters. Mr. Charles Mclntyre, of Hataitai, is a nephew. MR. JOHN FERNANDEZ Mr. John Fernandez, of 205 The Terrace, died yesterday in a private hospital, at the age of 78 years. Born in Melbourne, the late Mr. Fernandez came to-New Zealand 70 years ago. After varied employment he settled down to Government survey work as an assistant, in which capacity during the course of many years he visited practically every part of the Dominion. Cutting tracks through the 70-mile Bush was one of many familiar tasks in the development of then virgin country, in the course of which work he became well known to many of the older settlers. He lived in Wellington for 30 years, and for many years before his retirement he served with Messrs. Seaton, Sladden, and Pavitt, civil engineers. He is surI vived by a widow, a son, Mr. R. A. Fernandez, of the Pensions DepartI ment, and three daughters who live in i Australia. Another son, who was in ! the Union Bank of Australia, was I killed at the Somme.
