FINE AND COOL

BETTER WEATHER

Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong but decreasing southerly winds. Weather fine and cool.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong but decreasing south-easterly to southerly winds to the north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura. Elsewhere winds will be light to moderate and more variable, with a tendency later for northerlies in the south. Some scattered showers are still likely in eastern and northern districts of the North Island, but the weather there will improve and it will be fine elsewhere, but with cool temperatures.

Although barometers have risen over the Dominion, pressure this morning was relatively low in the north, while an anti-cyclone no\v covers the southern Tasman Sea and extends across the South Island. Southerly winds extended over the whole country last night and were strong about Cook Strait and in a few exposed places, but otherwise they were mostly light to moderate. Cool ar.d changeable weather has been experienced with rain at times in most districts. This morning, however, saw improved conditions over the greater part of the South Island.

Auckland's weather yesterday was fair although cloudy at times, a slight shower falling before midday. The wind was a moderate to fresh one from between north and west, but a light easterly was blowing this morning.

Wellington had a cloudy day. A strong and squally north-easterly wind blew during the morning, but it died away in the afternoon. A trace of rain fell about 4 p.m. and an hour later a southerly came up. Showers which fell during the night and early this morning totalled 11 points at Kelburn and 8 in Lower Hutt.

The weather in Christchurch was cool and dull, rain falling in the morning and there being some showers in the evening. The total fall amounted to 11 points. A fresh south-westerly wind blew most of the day, but the wind was lighter this morning, although from the same direction, and skies were still overcast.

Dunedin also had dull weather, with light rain at times, and a strong southerly wind. As in-other centres, the rainfall totalled 11 points. The weather there this morning was fine and clear with a light wind from the northeast.
