MORE RIDERS FOR LEVIN
(Special to the "Evening Post")
PALMERSTON N., This Day. The weather was delightful for track work at Awapuni yesterday morning and there were several interesting gallops. The course proper was open and the flags were not far from the outside fence. The going was really good, the horses hitting out with confidence.
Legatee, who is- likely to have his next outing under silk on the second day of the Feilding Spring Meeting, was sprinted five furlongs, and withoutbeing required to do his best he covered the distance in lmin 7£sec, the last two furlongs, over which he was going a bit faster, -taking 25Jsec. He pulled up well, and his effort was a pleasing one. Battle Pomp (B. Brown) and King's Lancer (G. Tattersall) were companions over five furlongs and they finished together after taking lmin 8 2-ssec. It was quite an attractive effort and they appeared to be doing their work well at the close.
The finishing effort of Barley Almond (Lackham—Butterscotch) was the feature of the flutter between Barley Almond, Princess La Jean, and Ruenzori, who finished in a bunch at the end of five furlongs. Ruenzori and Princess La Jean made the pace to the straight, Barley Almond appearing to be hopelessly out of It after missing the jump-away. At the bottom of the straight, however, Barley Almond commenced a run and at the post was a head in front of the others. The time was lmin 7 4-ssec, so that Ruenzori and Princess La Jean did not loaf on the journey. Ruenzori and Princess La Jean are both in at Levin, the former being in the Maiden Race and the latter in the Mako Mako Handicap. Symcony has not been asked to do | anything of a strenuous nature since her return from Australia, but she is 1 picking up steadily. Tiger Bill and Kitty Quin were galloped three furlongs in 42sec, not being under pressure. Treasure/Hunt (C. Thomson) andj Gold Cure (A. McDonald) were companions over six furlongs, and Treasure Hunt, getting the better of the start by about half a length, retained that margin to the finish. The time was lmin 23sec, and they could have done better without trouble.
Dawning Light looks none the worse for her racing at Riccarton and she was out doing pace work yesterday morning. La Crown, from the same stable, was given easy pace work. She will-■ probably be ready to race about Christmas time.
The only jumping before breakfast was that by Petrarch (J. Rae), Celeritas (A. McDonald), and Tambo (C. Thomson), the three going in company over five fences, all giving a good account of themselves.
Round Up was given a good working gallop over six furlongs. • The following riding engagements have been announced for Levin:—A. McDonald, Celeritas: C. Thomson, Tambo; G. Tattersall, Dampier (if started) and Cloudy Bay; L. H. Jones, Corroboree; and S. Anderson, Ruenzori, Trim den (Weraroa), Bazaine, and Treasure Hunt.
