UNCONVINCING ARGUMENT
To an interjection by one of the audience at Mr. E. W. Nicolaus's meeting last night at Seatoun, to the effect that Mr. Mazengarb had stated that the cause of the slump had been the fall in the prices of; exported produce,' the candidate said that-that: was the statement of an. uninformed/man. If the fall in prices h^.been the'cause of the slump in New Zealand, what then had been the cause of the fall in prices? The answer to that was the inability of the primary industries to' effectively demand goods from the secondary ones in Europe. This brought the matter to New Zealand as one of the biggest exporting countries. The cause definitely lay within each country, said Mr. Nicolaus. That cause was the inelasticity of rent or land prices which, were: fixed; under the private ownership of land. Under. the C.L.P.. Government, land/prices or rent would accommodate itself ito any fluctuation, leaving the producer with the same proportion of profit as before; . ' . . • ;.-••■ ■
