SUCCESSFUL BAZAAR
MIRAMAR BAPTIST CHURCH
A very successful bazaar was held last Saturday afternoon and evening at the Miramar Baptist Church. There were numerous stalls, sideshows, and competitions, and these were well patronised by the large numbers attending. The decorated buildings and grounds presented a gala appearance, which, coupled with perfect weather, added to the enjoyment of the day. The proceeds of the bazaar, which were most. satisfactory, are to be applied to reducir. o the debt on the church property.
' Prior to the opening a wheelbarrow relay race was held between teams from the Vivian Street Baptist Church and the Miramar Church, the former winning by a narrow margin. Mr. V. Francis acted as starter and judge. Much amusement was caused during the mock court in the evening when several well-known offend- < were fined for small delinquencies. The presiding judge was Mr. G. Ivory, who was ably assisted by court officials, and two clowns helped tr en-
liven .the proceedings. The "Mystery Man of Miramar" caused a great deal of conjecture as to his identity, and was later revealed to be the Rev. Joseph Carlisle, temporary pastor of the church.
A cooking competition was held and prizes were .won by,-Mrs. Campbell (best sponge cake),' Mrs. Brown (best plate of scones), and Mrs. Williams (best plate of pikelets). Miss Rennie, of Wellington Technical College, judged the many entries for: this competition and commented on the high standard attained by the competitors. Book prizes were awarded to Mrs. Hamlin and Miss Betty Chittenden for selling the greatest number of sixpenny thrift cards during the preceding month. The Rev. Joseph Carlisle presented the prizes during the evening.
The stall conveners were as follows: —Mrs. Hamlin (groceries), Mrs. Taylor (fancy), Mrs. Peach (vegetables), Mrs. Dear (cakes), Miss H. Grocott (confectionery), Miss J. Price (tea rooms), Mr. B. Taylor (books and general), Mr. T. W. Dear (soft drinks and ice cream), and Mr. R, Lovatt (sideshows). Mr. H. A. Harris was secretary and treasurer.
