DEATH ON RAILWAY

INQUEST OPENED

SYDNEY, November 18.

The inquest on Mr. Montague Henwood, State Conciliation Commissioner, was opened at Penrith. Edwin John Hickey, aged 17, who has been charged with murder, was present in custody during the inquest, which was adjourned until tomorrow.

Detective Wilks said that Hickey had admitted depositing at a railway cloakroom a suitcase which Hickey had said "belonged to an old chap who was in the train with me."

The detective added that when Hickey's attention was drawn to the bloodstains in the railway carriage he said: "That would probably coma from the old fellow. I gave him thre» or four hits with a bottle."

A cable dated November 4 stated that mystery surrounded the tragic death of Mr. M. Henwood, State Conciliation Commissioner, aged 65, whose body was found alongside the railwayline near Faulconbridge, 51 miles west of Sydney. One side of Mr. Henwood's head was shockingly injured. His vest pockets were turned inside out. His gold watch and chain were untouched, but his hat and baggage were missing. At the Central Police Court, Sydney, on November 6, Edwin John Hickey, described as a dairy hand, was remanded on a charge of murdering Mr. Henwood. '
