The official list of candidates for the total of 80 Parliamentary seats shows that for the 76 European seats there are 246 candidates, and for the four Maori seats 19, making a total of 265 —the largest number, to stand for many years. The grouping of parties, as compiled from "The Post's" list, is as follows:— Nationalist , 72 Independent Nationalist 4 Labour 72 Democrat 52 | Independent 31 I Liberal 5 Communist 4 Country Party 4 Ratana 3 Liberal-Labour 2 Independent Labour 1 Independent Liberal 1 National Liberal 1 Independent Radical 1 Independent Socialist 1 National United 1 Independent Country Party 1 Independent Labour-Liberal 1 Commonwealth Land Party 1 Unspecified 7 Total ■ 265 The seats straight-out Nationalists are not contesting are Auckland Central, Avon, Dunedin West, Egmont, Gisborne, Waitemata, and Thames. Labour has no candidates in the following electorates:—-Bay of Islands, Franklin, Kaipara, Mataura, Nelson, Northern Maori, Eastern Maori, and Southern Maori. Although there are cases where there are as many as five and six candidates for the one seat, there are 15 constituencies in which there will be straight-out contests. They are: Avon, Buller, Clutha, Dunedin South, Dunedin West, Egmont, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Hutt, Motueka, Nelson, Timaru, Wellington Central, Wellington Suburbs, and Westland.
