AEROPLANE MYSTERY

A VANISHED MACHINE

On July 30, the United States Army's newest and most efficient fighting aeroplane was taken up by a test pilot for its, maiden flight. Since then neither the pilot nor the machine has been seen, says the "Daily Express." The builders of the machine instructed the pilot not to fly out, of sight of the municipal airport at Los Angeles. It was last sighted flying along the coast. Army aeroplanes conducted a careful search along the route , indicated, and established definitely i that the machine was not wrecked on land, and that it had not crashed into the sea, at least within a reasonable j range of the airport. It is related, however, that a highspeed motor-boat of unknown registration and ownership followed the aeroplane up the coast from Los Angeles and also disappeared from sight. The wife of the pilot has organised posse 3 to search in remote canyons and isolated mountains. She is convinced that her husband is still alive, and that he has made a forced landing in a remote spot. The machine was of radical design, I and was stated to be capable of ! travelling at 350 miles an hour.
