COACHING SCHEME
ATHLETES TO BENEFIT
Details of the coaching scheme which is to operate in Wellington this season, and the general plan of which has already been published in "The Post," were discussed at last night's meeting of the "Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Mr. A. Hose, one of the prime movers in the scheme, in outlining the arrangements which had already been completed, stated that a series of lectures would be given in various phases of athletics by competent persons. The lectures, which were to be held at the Basin Reserve every Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock, would commence on November 20, when the speaker would be Dr. P. A. Treahy. Dr. E. G. Lynch had also promised to support the scheme; Sergeant J. W. McHolm (former New Zealand ham-mer-throwing champion) was prepared to lecture on, field events), Mr. H. E. Wilson (ex-Olympic representative hurdler) to give practical coaching in hurdling, and Mr. Campbell Cree to lecture on general physical fitness. Several other prominent exchampions, said Mr. Hose, were willing to assist. It was urged by the speaker that the clubs should give the scheme every support, since its success or failure would depend upon their enthusiasm. This was the first time anything in the way of systematised coaching for all clubs had been attempted in Wellington, and it was the duty of officials to see that its full importance was brought home to the members of the respective clubs. If this was done, he had no doubt that the scheme would hay? a beneficial reaction' upon the sport in Wellington.
