It is reported from Asmara' tliat Italian troops recovered the bulk of the goods looted by Abyssinians from Ras Gougsa's house in Makale, a quantity of which- were recaptured from a caravan near Betmariam. The fifty guards of.the caravan were routed by Italian native troops as the result of smart work by ■'a ' reconnaissance aeroplane. The aviator parachuted a message to the askari column disclosing the whereabouts of the looters, and the askaris made a forced march by night and intercepted the caravan, whose defenders, though, they entrenched themselves on a hillside, were shaken by a bayonet charge and routed from the reserve line by a second rush. The Abyssinians lost 20 killed, and 10 were taken prisoners, together with <$00 camels laden with agricultural goods and other supplies.

In the course of celebrations of Victor Emanuel's birthday, 35,000 troops marched past Signor Mussolini, cavalry and infantry preceding the sinis- v ter-hued vans of the chemical.warfare section, 130 guns, and 140 tanks After referring to the Italian victories in Abyssinia, Signor Mussolini pointed out that the parade represented only an infinitesimal portion of Italy's armed forces, .who were ready to defend Italian interests not only in Africa but in Europe. "In a month or two the old .score will be settled," he added. "The rest will be settled later."

ITALY PROTESTS TO POWERS JUDICIAL & MORAL GROUNDS (Received November 12, 12.43 p.m.) ROME, November 11. Italy has notified all the Powers applying sanctions that she is protesting on judicial and moral grounds against the application of sanctions, and against the denial of justice by the League's action in enforcing Article 16 against Italy, inasmuch as the Article was not invoked against Japan, Bolivia, or Paraguay. ' •": • .• Italy is dispatching a differentlyworded Note to Egypt because she is not a Member of the League. It is believed that the protests repeat the charge that Abyssinia is a guilty party against whom League action should be applied. The Government has issued adecrea announcing the virtual suspension of all trade with countries applying sanctions, and providing.that a permit from the Finance Ministry must be obtained before merchants may import any of 128 listed articles. The decree will-be-come operative on November IS.
