ART ALSO A "PRESENT"
In winning the Moonee Valley Gold up a/oj'taight ago, after having also succeeded m the Werribee Cup three days previously, the Western Australian visitor Art was responsible for a rather striking performance. He made nearly every yard of the running, and was able to hold off a strong challenge from the lightweight Dick Devon, ihere was nothing fluky about the result, as it was a soundly-run race. That was shown by the fact that Art reduced lV 1- eJ'!!" ne l record for the race made by Nightly last year by 6ssec, and the course record for the distance by s*sec Art, a five-year-old brown horse by High Art, was raced in Sydney as a two-year-old by. his breeder, Mr. Hunter White, but he could not win a race that season. Mr. White is an old friend ?l th£ Western Australia handicapper Mr. D. C. Braham, and, learning Mr. Braham's son was anxious to & cqSre,.a s-e -Jikely-- to do well in Perth, Mr. White made him a present of Art for the period of his racing career.
It would be interesting to know how many horses Mr. Hunter White has given away, .writes an Australian critic. He made a present of Kogilla to his son for racing at picnic meetings, but as picnic racing was discontinued during the depression Rogilla was leased to Haigh, who did so well with him. Another horse with whom Mr. White parted in the same way was the Metropolitan winner Oro, whom he presented to .liis trainer, Jack King, for the remainder of his racing career. Most people give away bad horses, but Mr. White parts with good ones, and he would gain great pleasure from the fact that his gift horses have turned out well for their new owners.
