SECOND "STRING" SCORES
Wild Chase, who had failed in the heavy going at Trentham, came from the clouds to save the Clifford bracket in the Welcome Stakes. It was the other "leg," speedy Paper Slipper, whom 'investors were mainly backing when they sent the bracket out nearly as Well supported as Pelmet, but Paper Slipper was beaten a furlong from the post. Pelmet then looked toe winner, but she was helpless against the final claim of the stable's second string. Wild Chase was not near the front in the early stages. Kow Tow led on to the straight from Dawning Light, Paper Slipper, and Pelmet, and this quartet was some lengths clear of Wild Chase, who was just ahead of the other pair. Dawning Light and then Kow Tow found the distance beating them, •and' Pelmet moved iip to take the .ascendancy over Paper Slipper, but just as ■ the Limond filly was being hailed the winner Wild. Chase burst down on her and bea,t her to the post by a length and a half. Paper Slipper was. nearly, two lengths' away, with Kow Tow and Dawning Light following, and the other pair well beaten off. .
It. was Sir Charles Clifford's first Welcome Stakes, but his father won the race with Tomorrow, Winning Way, Battle: Eve, Moorfowl, arid Childsplay. wild Chase is a powerfully-quartered bay colt by Paper Money from the Autumnus mare Wild Hind, the dam also of Winsome Hind and Fleeting Ulance, and when he won the John tr.ngg Stakes at Ashburton in September he" was the first Paper Money horse ever to carry the Clifford livery He has now won two races in tHree starts, and he looks a better type for the seasons, to come than Paper Slipper. :
