Although weather conditions were good most of the grounds were on the dead side when the Mercantile League A grade games were commenced on Saturday. Competition was keen generally and there were two close finishes, Woolworths and Amalgamated Bricks being fairly evenly matched, and Taxes and Jasco running close. Morgan (Mental Hospital) scored the first and only century for the day, but several other batsmen passed the halfcentury mark. Stiver (Woolworths,) topped the bowling by taking eight wickets for 50 runs, and C. F. Murphy and Aldridge also returned good' figures with the ball, but ap.art from .that wickets, did not ..fall very easily. Customs, who were runners-up in last year's championship, were beaten by Roseneath at Athletic Park, Woolworths beat Amalgamated Bricks after Stiver saved the situation with some brilliant bowling, Prestige put up 175 against Public Trust and then dismissed the Trust men fairly, briskly, McKenzie being the only one to hold his ground at all well, Hospital had a fairly comfortable win over Smith and Smiths, and Taxes made a late run to beat Jasco with four wickets to spare.
