CENTURY BY MONTEATH; BOWLERS DO WELL
.. -After having been deprived of two afternoons^of match play, local cricketers relished the pleasant" break on Saturday^ .afternoon in the unseasonable weather and entered keenly into their competitions: ; Wickets and grounds generally, however, were affected by the, drenchings which they had received; and the; influence of sun and breeze caused them to become "tricky in some cases. There were bowlers ,who found matters very much'to their likings and'several of them reaped a harvest. Still, the batting department supplied :goods;of an. acceptable kind. A splendid century by Monteath, Wth Ross also contributing well, put Hutt in a commanding position over.Kilbirnie, and then Judd and Ross paired as bowlers in bringing about the downfall of last season's champions, who slipped : badly in their tatting. Wilson did best for Kilbirnie, and indulged in some big hitting. The Midland-Wellington match at the Basin Reserve., was keen and interesting, a low-scoring match resulting in Wellington's favour. Whyte, Lowry, and. Morgan shaped well with.the bat for Wellington, but O'Neill was the only one to make headway for Midland, whose collapse was brought about.mainly by . Blundell's effective bowling. Keating had bowled well for Midland and took four, wickets, but Blundell, secured a fine bag of seven. Karori... (latest entrants to senior ranks) scored a win over Wellington -College Old Boys, Duffy and Cutts batting, well, and McDonald and King sharing the bowling honours. Burnette (with the bat)-and--Griffiths (who recorded a fine bowling performance in taking seven wickets) were the leading, lights among Old Boys. Wiren;McMillan, and Blandfoid gave University a plentiful supply of runs, but Petone managed to avert.defeat, i Wellington hold, the leading place in the senior championship competition by three points from Hutt and Karori.
