AN APPEAL TO ACCOUNTANTS.
An appeal to English accountants' not to use their skill to defeat the Inland Revenue authorities was made by Professor J. H. Jones, of Leeds University, at the recent annual conference of the London Association of Certified Accountants, at Newcastle. It was a tribute to the profession, he said, that qualified accountants were accepted as collaborators for the purpose of preparing accounts for inspection by the Inland Revenue. Nevertheless it was well known that some less reputable accountants prided themselves on their ability to" detect avenue? of escape . from taxation,' and therefore attracted a type of taxpayer who hoped to evade his obligations.
