NEWS OF THE DAY

A Hulk Uses the Dock,

Yesterday for the first time in its history the Jubilee Dock was used by one of Wellington's fast-diminishing fleet of coal hulks. The hulk Alameda, which belongs to the Westport Coal Company, left the breastwork late yesterday morning, and was safely docked not long afterwards for overhaul and cleaning. She has been the property of her present owners for some 38 years, but before that she flew the American flag. Value of Tracts. Keporting to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon, the tract committee stated that as it pursued its work it became increasingly evident that ministers throughout the country were feeling the need of some suitable literature to place in the hands of the people. Questions disturbing to the Christian faith were continually arising, and the wisdom of providing the Church with some pronouncement from the Christian point of view and also from the standpoint of the Presbyterian Church would not be disputed. The Rev. Dr. J. D. Salmond said he had been greatly impressed with the propaganda value of the cheap pamphlet; It was one of the spear points, as it were, in Soviet Russia and of the Nazis in Germany, for instance. He mentioned the ■ intention of the committee to distribute next year a pamphlet on Christian marriage, which he said he thought was badly needed, and also on Christian baptism It was suggested by the Rev. J. T. Macky that it would perhaps be advantageous to produce something a little more elaborate and that the word "tract" should not be used. Rightly or wrongly the word "tract" had got into bad odour. It was decided to commend the booklets to the attention of ministers, office-bearers, and ■ the people. Description of a Budget. Something new in budget descriptions was introduced by the Rev. G. H. Jupp at the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon. A budget, he said, had "no body to be kicked or a soul to be condemned to the outer darkness." Ministers' Loan Fund. On the motion of the Rev,. Dr. J. D. Salmond, the General of the Presbyterian Church yesterday afternon instructed the beneficiary fund committee to investigate the ministers' loan fund of the Scottish Church and the house purchase fund of the Methodist Church of New. Zealand with a view to introducing similar schemes into the Presbyterian Church in 'New Zealand. Dr. Salmond referred to the expense a young minister had to go to in setting, up in a maiise and the necessity nowadays, especially in country parishes, of the minister having the usa of a car. Slip on Horokiwi Road. A large slip came down on the Horokiwi Road this week, but did not block traffic. This road was widened by the Public Works Department, using relief labour, and has since been handed over to the Makara County Council. For a few years after the construction of roads in hilly country slips are to be expected. The spoil in this case is being cleared away. Rose Day Returns. The final returns for Rose Day in the Wellington area have now been received by the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association, the total amount collected being £542 3s lOd, an increase of approximately £115 on last year, when the total was £427 15s sd. In addition to the amounts collected in the city and already announced, the following amounts were collected in outlying areas:—Lower Hutt, £22 7s; Eastbourne, £18 8s lld;'Petone, £16 7s 8d; Upper Hutt, £10 14s 6d; and Porirua, £3 16s 3d. Health Stamps For Postage. Some people are under the impression that when a Health Stamp is used on a letter for abroad it is necessary to use also an ordinary stamp to pay the postage. It was stated by the Post Office authorities today that Health Stamps will pay the postage on letters to any country in the world. In the case of countries to which penny postage applies, one Health Stamp is sufficient. Of course, in respect of those few countries to which 2id postage applies, the use of more than one Health Stamp is necessary to pay postage. Each Health Stamp represents Id for postage and Id for health. The Health Stamp campaign continues to be conducted with an entire absence of expense. There will be only one side to the balance-sheet. Every penny contributed goes straight to, the Children's Fund. The voluntary helpers selling stamps in post offices, shops, and elsewhere are giving their services free.
