SPEED'S GOOD TEIAL
GALLOPING FOR HASTINGS
Although the New Zealand Cup Meeting will naturally hold main notice on Saturday, there will be plenty of interest in the North Island in the Hawke's Bay Meeting at Hastings, where good fields of form horses are engaged in all events. There have been occasional showers in the Bay this week, but it was fine for the work at Hastings on Tuesday, when the tracks were in excellent order (says "The Barb"). I
Master Cyklon, who appears to have greatly improved by the run he recently had at the Waipawa Meeting, ran three furlongs against the bit in 43sec. Sunny Maid was not extended when running the last four of six furlongs in 531 sec. Hest and Shirred Ribbon finished abreast, with the former going the better, at the end of five furlongs run in lmin 3 3-ssec —a fair effort.
On the course proper Blue Garter pleased by sprinting half a mile in 49-]scc. Black Magic, alone, and going well within herself, ran five furlongs in lmin ssec. The two-year-old Mohua was restricted to slow pace work. Refulgent just shaded Drumpeel in a sharp sprint over half a mile in 51sec. Speed impressed as coming back to his best form when getting to the end of a once round trial comfortably in lmin 41 2-sscc.
Maine, on the course proper, where the trestles were wide out, executed a working gallop alone in lmin 35 2-ssec. This mare, who has only recently returned from Auckland, looks well. Using the same track Hard Times had Silver Tide's measure over half a mile in alsec.
There -was nothing impressive in Sybil Song's defeat of Peggy Defoe over three-quarters of a mile in lmin 22sec. Version and Larwood, who are booked for the Waikato Meeting, impressed for novices by sprinting half a mile on the course proper in 49£ sec. For a hurdler, Isms did well to gallop five furlongs in lmin 4isec. The big gelding finished most resolutely. In a half-mile flutter Morning Quest was half a length to the good of Cawbeen after taking 51sec. Royal Shift and Journet were associated in a fast exhibition of jumping over a round of the schooling fences, and Royal Shift was four lengths ahead at the finish. i This gelding actually outjumped Jour!net at two of the six fences, but at the last obstacle had a life. The time, lmin 39sec, was the best put up on the Hastings track for some time. _ Ephialtes strode along freely in his working gallop and showed no signs of the lameness that was visible just prior to the Waipawa Meeting. On the course proper Lavina was a length in front of Contact, who just shaded Huntette in a half-mile gallop in SOlsec. Although Contact ran over a little extra'ground, Lavina was doing it the easiest of the trio passing the post The course proper was also used for the trial of Royal Minstrel and Silver River, the former going very easily to finish half a length ahead in 49 3-ssec. Royal Minstrel, next time out. should show an improvement on any previous effort. From a slow start Gay Doll took 41sec over three furlongs, failing to impress. The Grasper went once round in lmin 44sec. Over the first portion of the journey the pace was slow. Gasman footed half a mile comfortably and impressively in sO3sec. His stable-mate Pohika moved very short when trotting. Soho and Peter Beckford were restriced to a working gallop over five furlongs.
