LABOUR QUEEN CARNIVAL

The Grand Fair, which' is the cut minating effort of the Labour Queen Carnival, was officially opened at the Trades Hall yesterday afternoon by Mr. P. Fraser, who was accompanied by Mrs. Fraser. He congratulated the committee and stall-holders on the excellence of their efforts. The Social Hall was tastefully decorated, the colours of the various queens being prominent on the respective stalls. The stalls are arranged as follows:— Produce (Suburbs) s cakes (East), sweets (South), flowers (North), and miscellaneous and fancywork. (Central).

Last evening a successful concert presented by Miss Margaret Oates.and her pupils was enjoyed by a large attendance. Some beautiful ballets were arranged, and the whole programme of songs, recitations, dances, and jigs..reflected credit on Miss Oates and the talented children. .

The stalls were well patronised; and the sideshows caused much amuse-' ment.

The carnival will be continued this afternoon and evening and tomorrow afternoon and evening. Admission to all sessions is free, and the public are cordially invited to accept the invitation to attend. Free prizes will be distributed each evening at 9 o'clock. It was announced last evening that the order of the queen candidates was as follows:—Suburbs (Miss Hening), South (Miss McKeen), East (Miss Tucker), North (Miss Walton), Central (Miss Jeffries).

Competition and friendly rivalry are becoming more keen as the carnival draws to a close. There is not much' separating the candidates, and the positions are changing rapidly. The winning queen will be announced shortly after the conclusion of the carnival, and will be crowned at a ceremony to be held later. The queens are in daily attendance at the fair.
