Modera c to.strong westerly to south-westerly winds prevailed yesterday, accompanied by showers, more especially in districts with a westerly aspect; in the night, however, winds became more generally southerly and unsettled conditions and rain have since heen experienced in most districts, some scattered heavy falls having occurred. -In the southern and eastern coastal areas or the South Island there have been soma hail showers. By this morning the southerly had increased in force and cold, squally and showery conditions were reported In most parts, but In Westland an improvement had taken place. •
