INCREASE IN GAMBLING

ASSEMBLY PERTURBED

HOSPITAL SWEEPSTAKES;;.

ART UNIONS CONDEMNED

The convener of the public questions committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. J...T. Macky, called pointed attention during last evening's .discussion, to the marked -increase in gambling in the Dominion. - ' . '■> Mr. Macky said that he was not thinking particularly of horse-racing, for if gambling were confined: to horseracing there would not be nearly so much to worry,, about. There was of late a very marked increase-in the number of art unions and raffles. There was a growing' tendency on the part of sports bodies to rely upon raffles and art unions for-funds, but things had come to a pretty ■'. pass when people would not.pay for their sports and amusements. ) Proceeds from-the larger art unions, it was true, were devoted to philanthropic purposes, and it was said that there was no other means of raising funds'. That, he considered, was a serious reflection upon the people of New Zealand. A large number of people on relief work were buying tickets, further adding to their difficulties. Art unions were a disgrace to the Government and degrading to. the people who' took part in them. Over and above that, - responsible people were actually suggesting that sweepstakes should be introduced for the support of hospitals.; The New Zealand hospital system had come in for a good deal of criticism,, but with that he did not propose to deal. He was convinced, however, .that no fairer basis of support of a hospital system could be found than that obtaining in New Zealand. It would be a very sorry thing if ■ sweepstakes should be introduced to New Zealand for the support of hospitals." Mr. Macky's motion that.the Church should protest against the Government giving consent to. an increasing number of art unions and that the committee should be empowered to oppose any attempt to introduce sweepstakes into New Zealand, was unanimously carried.
