SALE OF WORK

SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY

There was a definite bazaar atmosphere at the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Hall yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. Khox Gilmer officially declared the Ladies' Guild sale of work open. Mrs. Gilmer was escorted to the platform by the Rev. Harry and Mrs. Johnson. After singing a hymn, the Rev. T. A. Brady led in prayer. ■

Mr. Johnson welcomed Mrs. Knox Gilmer on behalf of the guild and the members of the church. In doing so he referred appreciatively to the active interest always taken by Mrs. Gilmer in all service for the public good. Mrs. Gilmer, in a happilydelivered speech, paid a tribute to the ladies who had organised and worked for the sale. She hadH?een introduced on one occasion as an "old identity," and said she had always been identified with the work of church guilds. It was in such work and service that universal brotherhood , could be best achieved. She then declared the sale open. Little Noelene Henderson and Tui Connibear presented bouquets respectively to Mrs.: Knox Gilmer and Mrs. Johnson.

Afternoon tea was seryed, and the splendidly decorated and heavily-laden stalls were thronged with eager purchasers.

In the evening a large audience enjoyed an entertainment provided by the pupils of Mrs. Halligan. Every item evoked well-merited, applause, and a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.

The sale closes tonight, when the concert programme will be directed by Messrs. T. L. Cocks and E. Thawley.
