FORTY-HOUR WEEK

UNIFORMITY ESSENTIAL

"A forty-hour week for workers has been an item of outstanding interest to employers in New Zealand, and also in other parts of the world," says the report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Wellington Builders' and Contractors' Union tomorrow. "Workers in their claims for new awards are including provisions for i forty-hour week, and in substantiation claim that a reduction of the number of unemployed would take place as a result of such a departure. The fortyhour week was the subject of much discussion at the Internationa] Labour Conference at Geneva, at which the principle of a shorter working week was accepted. It is hoped that the fullest inquiry will be made before any convention is brought about. "It would be most undesirable in such a difficult matter to act without knowledge of the effect of such a change. Unless universally adopted, the forty-hour week would confer a competitive advantage upon employers (particularly in manufacturing trades') in other countries, and it would therefore seem most essential to be assured of having uniformity by international legislation or agreement."
