AMATEUR ATHLETICS
THE MACASSEY CUP
A letter from the Otago Centre expressing its thanks at the council's decision to accept a trophy commemorating the services of Mr. E. L. Macassey was received at the meeting of the council of the Now Zealand Amateur I Athletic Association last night. The letter stated that the rules governing the trophy would not need to be elaborate. It was suggested that "in connection with the 440 yds event at the New Zealand track and field championship there shall be awarded to the winner a trophy to be known as the E. L. Macassey Memorial Trophy to be held for one year, in event of a tie the time of holding to be apportioned." Mr. L. A. Tracy said that he had been informed that many years .ago the council passed a resolution that it was not prepared to accept individual trophies. Mr. McVilly stated that he was prepared to rule that, notwithstanding the decision referred to by Mr, Tracy, the trophy should be accepted. He thought that it was only fitting that when a trophy was presented to perpetuate the memory of a gentleman like Mr. Macassey, who had done a great deal to help amateur athletics in New Zealand, and who had attained the position of president, that trophy should be accepted.
Mr. Austad endorsed the remarks of Mr.. McVilly.
