GRETNA GREEN "MENACE"
Sir Godfrey Collins, Secretary for Scotland, informed a deputation in Edinburgh recently that he proposed to appoint a committee to inquire into the marriage law of Scotland, to ascertain if any changes were desirable. He hoped that it might be possible for a high legal authority to undertake the chairmanship, and that both sexes would serve on the committee.
The deputation urged the necessity for a change in the marriage laws of Scotland to cope with what they described as "the menace of Gretria Green irregular marriages." The Church of Scotland,. they stated, had long felt concerned at the large number of irregular marriages and in particular at the scandals of clandestine ceremonies at Gretna Green.
Irregular marriages were often hasty and ill-considered and gave scope for deception and imposition. Many of them were invalid because the parties had not complied with the conditions of residence, and as the majority were never registered, they were frequently incapable of proof in later years.
