THE-UNEMPLOYED

MORE SHOULD BE DONE

A.wide range of subjects was covered by Mr. R. A. Wright, Independent candidate for Wellington Suburbs,' in his address to electors at Wadestown last night. The meeting, ' which was well attended, was very orderly. Mr. A. R. Otway presided.

Commenting on the unemployment problem, the candidate said that the Government had not behaved fairly so far as the unemployed were concerned. ■ More money could" have' been allowed the men, but those concerned did not permit it. "There were sufficient funds available, for increased weekly.payments. He was pleased to know' that some of the unemployed would soon be receiving standard fates of pay, but this position could. have obtained before. . There was only one remedy for unemployment, and that was the general prosperity of the country. This, however, was largely dependent upon the general prosperity of the world.

Mr. Wright said he considered that the sales tax was- one of the • most iniquitous and vexatious taxes ever levied in the Dominion.

A motion, moved by Mr. H. Eaton and seconded by Mr. W. Bryce, expressing complete confidence in the candidate, was carried unanimously and- with acclamation.
