MELBOURNE, November 3.
The weather was threatening but there was an excellent attendance for the V.B.C. races on Saturday.
Link Divine finished strongly to win the Wakeful Stakes. This is her second win 'in three starts here. The time was a race record.
Fidelity led throughout in the Maribyrnong Plate. She- has now had two starts for two wins. A head wind militated against fast time. Sir Geraint made a game race under his penalty, while Martinborough was never dangerous.
Sylvandale led throughout the Melbourne Stakes. Marabou finished fast from the rear of the field. Hall Mark also came on strongly at the finish. Peter Pan had every chance at the second turn, but faded away and beat only Contact in the race for home. It was a disappointing performance. This was Peter Pan's first defeat in six starts at Flemington. It was a great Cup trial for Marabou.
Feldspar, who was eighth at the halfmile, finished brilliantly to win the Derby. Allunga also, ' came -home strongly, while Garno was always prominent. Feldspar and Garrio are both trained by the former New Zealander L. Robertson. Palfresco was prominent in the last'six furlongs, and took command at the half-mile but tired as the result of making ground so rapidly. Young Idea, was beaten when he fell two furlongs from home. East Cape was outclassed. Feldspar and Garrio are owned by their breeder, Mr. A. T. Creswick, one of Australia's veteran owners. There was a wonderful finish in the Cantala Stakes, 10 horses disputing the lead 50 yards from home. Hostile was Prominent always and just held off Whittingham, with Press Gang a fastfinishing third. Silver Jubilee, who had every chance, was seventh, and Epigram sixth. Sarcherie greatly enhanced her cup prospects by a runaway win in the Hotham Handicap. Dick Devon and Oro had every chance. The winner gave her Queensland rider, F. Shean, his first Victorian success. Sporting Blood finished in great style. THE WAKEFUL STAKES, £750; for tliree-year-old fillies; 1 mile. W.
