EARTHQUAKE JOLT
VERY SLIGHT LOCALLY
An earthquake of minor intensity was felt in Wellington at 4.1 p.m. on Saturday. Its origin is estimated to have been some fifty miles distant, probably in the Cook Strait, acid as the jolt was felt more severely in the Wanganui district, its centre was probably in that direction. This earthquake was one of several recorded during the day, all the others being too slight to be felt. Indeed, that one too was not noticed by a great many people in and around Wellington, but it was just sufficiently strong to set suspended lights gently swinging. People who were sitting down felt the jolt, which lasted for a very short time, but those who were-standing up and walking about did not. SHARP IN PLACES. Reports from provincial centres indicate that the earthquake was felt sharply at Masterton and W^anganui. It lasted ten seconds at Wanganui and caused some alarm but no damage. At both places' a further tremor was experienced in the evening. Palmerston North felt the afternoon earthquake as only a slight one. At Levin the shock was sharp but of short duration. Women and children attending a picture matinee were alarmed but no damage occurred.
