SWIMMING
PETONE CLUB'S OPENING
• Despite the unfavourable weather,! a good number attended the opening of the season of the Petone Swimming Club on Saturday afternoon. , j Dr. J. Harding, president of the club, apologised for the absence of Mr W. Nash at Whangarei and the Mayor j (Mr. A. Scholefield), who was at a ■ funeral. Mr. Scholefield had assured him, he said, that the Borough Council was going to make funds available for finishing the accommodation of the baths. The council would guarantee accommodation for adults as well as children. He would like to thank the council for meeting the club in every way. . Mr. N.- McCartney, ex-chairman. of the Wellington Swimming Centre, congratulated the club on overcoming the difficulties of the first1 year. He hoped that during the season the club would j become more prosperous than before! and would" take a prominent part in I competitions in the Hutt Valley and in Wellington. He stressed the need of training if one wished to become a good swimmer. The reason the swimming association existed was not only to teach people to swim but to encourage them to swim better. j An apology for non-attendance was i received from Mr. W. Gerrie, chairman J of the Wellington Swimming Centre. I Dr. Harding specially thanked the swimmers from Lower Hutt for their co-operation. Results of the races were as follows: Visitors' Race.—H. Warburton 1. A. Valentine 2, Miss W. Pritchard and N. Milne 3 (equal). Club Event.—J. Dougan 1, P. Burborough 2, -J. Cleland 3. Dive.—J. Cleland 1, Miss W. Pritchard 2.
