YACHTING
TWO CLUBS OPEN )
PORT NICHOLSON
The last of two of Wellington's six yacht clubs opened their season on Saturday afternoon in fine but overcast weather. They were the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and the Worser Bay Boating Club.
I At Port Nicholson the commodore, | Mr. W. P. Rollings, mentioned the spirit o?. good will that existed amongst Wellington yachtsmen and said that Port Nicholson and Evans Bay would co-operate in the sailing of the first races after Christmas, on January 18, thus providing what was for Wellington the novelty of two clubs sailing their races over the same course and making it possible for a boat to win two prizes at the same time. There were so many trophies to be competed for that sooner or later there would have to be even greater co-operation. CUP FOR LADIES' RACE. • Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, the club's president, handed to Miss E. Kiernan the Kirkcaldie Cup, which she won last year in the ladies' race. The' trophy is always presented on opening day. . .;■ .-.-■■. , .. ■■':.; .. Colonel Campbell then expressed his hope that yachting would continue to flourish. It was a pleasure to him to see so many young fellows demonstrating their skill afloat, : but he thought they had a good .deal to . be thankful for. The Harbour Board had provided them with a safe anchorage which, though it was not going to be big enough in the future, enabled yachtsmen to go to sleep at night with the certain knowledge that their boats would still be at their moorings next morning. In his time they could not do that; sometimes they found'the boats piled up at Ngahauranga.. .•■..' He hoped they would have a season of good yachting weather, which for-i some meant fine ' weather "and for others who had the true spirit- of the sport, a hatful of wind, the spray in their faces, and the lee deck under water. Breaking out the club burgee, Colonel Campbell declared the season open. RONA-JELLICOE CONTEST. Captain W. J. Keane, chairman of the Wellington Provincial Yacht' and Motor-boat Association and commodore of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motorboat Club, joined with Mr; Rollings in expressing pleasure at this yearns experiment of sailing two clubs' races in conjunction, and the hope, that it, would become permanent. In Auckland a boat could win as many as five or six races on the one day, and there was no reason why something similar should not be attempted here. On behalf of the association he thanked the club for its support and Colonel Campbell for his gift of the Campbell Cup for the Wellington RonaJellicoe championship. The contest for this trophy would be sailed soon in conjunction with the Sanders Cup trials, 'and Captain Keane stated definitely that only strict X-class 1923 Rona boats would be -eligible. He spoke also of the Idle Along championship, to be sailed in-February, for which it was hoped to present a cup in memory of a Port'Nicholson member, the late Mr. J. Moffat.
Mr. A. Shearer extended the good wishes of the Paremata Boating Club and assured those present of his club's ambition to have its name first inscribed on the Campbell Cup. - No races, were sailed during the afternoon, though several boats of classes were on the harbour in splendid yachting weather.
