WELCOME AT AUCKLAND
EXHIBITION MATCHES

AUCKLAND, November 3,
• A large crowd which attended the Stanley Street tenniscourts on Saturday afternoon gave a most enthusiastic welcome to three well-known overseas players who appeared in exhibit tion matches against Aucklanders. The visitors were N. E. Brookes, manager of the. Australian Davis Cup team, and former champion of the world, F.; J. Perry, present' holder of the world's title, and Miss Joan Hartigan, former Australian and New Zealand champion. . '. A particularly fine reception was accorded the veteran ■ player Brookes. New Zealanders remember that he and the late Anthony Wilding, of Christchurch, were responsible for bringing the Davis Cup to Australia arid New Zealand or as the combined team was then called Australasia. ,
Two singles matches were completed during the afternoon, and almost two sets of doubles. Perry defeated N. G. Sturt in three sets in the first' singles, while Miss Hartigan defeated Miss Marjorie Macfarlane in straight" sets in the other singles. Perry and Brookes won the first set of; doubles against Sturt arid M. T. Wilson, but the Aucklahders were leading 4-3 in tfie second set when the visitors had to leave to catch the Lurline for Sydney. • : '•'"•.. '•
