Many interesting facts regarding the City of London's expenditure are revealed in the cash accounts of the Corporation, issued recently by the Chamberlain, Sir Adrian Pollock says the "Daily Telegraph." It was dis closed that: The "Sultan China," bought for about £300 in connection with the entertainment of a Sultan of Turkey realised £28 5s 8d; At the reception of officers of the London Divisions of the Territorial Army, which cost £2467, £13 was spent on gloves, £66 on cigars, and £57 on flowers; The Lord Mayor's robes cost £93, and repairs to the state coach £52. Ale conners' salaries amounted to £40; Fire insurance at St. Paul's Cathedral gardens came to 7d; and £2180 was allowed for policemen's boots. The " Sultan China" comprised elaborately ornamented dinner and tea services bought for the entertainment of a Sultan of Turkey. It was preserved at Guildhall and later at the Mansion House. Recently it was decided to sell it, but no satisfactory offer was received, and it was dispersed by lot to • mem- J bers of the Corporation. Many pieces had been broken. • The address of congratulation to the Duke of Kent and the wedding present cost £537. Rents, tolls, etc., received at Smith field Market amounted to £153,335, compared with £48,353 at Billingsgate Market. Administration of the Old Bailey cost £15,246, and insurance of the collection of plate at the Mansion House £260.
