Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Independent candidate for Wellington North, was warmly snd enthusiastically received at her meeting in the Mission Hall, Aro Street, last night.; . There were about 160 people present, and throughout the meeting was-very orderly. Although there were many interjections, the speaker dealt with them effectively. .. • Mrs. Gilmer stressed the need for protecting proved economic secondary industries. If this' were done, she said, it would go a long way. towards solving the unemployment problem. For instance, endeavours should-be made in the direction of' canning ol fruit, the development of the fishing industry, manufacture, of brass fittings, farm implements, dairy, requisites,, etc. Ne-.v Zealand's woollen goods were second to none in the world, and .mora attention should be paid to this industry. '. , < ' ' Mrs. Gilmer said that during her campaign she would like to deal largely with domestic problems. Politicians today did not pay sufficient attention to these questions. They devoted their time to exchange and currency questions, but she maintained' there were not many men in New Zealand today capable of dealing with such matters. "There are eight men capable of doins so, but they are not in New: Zealand's Parliament," she said. ■
Asked for her opinion concerning • 40-kour week, the speaker said she thought the matter would be an international one, but if it was aquestion for Kew Zealand she would support.it
She agreed in answer to another question that some members- of the Legislative Council were political reReplying to an interjector, Mrs. Gilmer said: "If you can find a Labour member in this city who has done more for the worker, his wife, aqd his chil- , dren than I have, show him to me.':'
A motion expressing full confidence in Mrs. Gilmer to represent.the- Wellington North district in' Parliament was carried with only three or.fom dissentients. .-. ' '
