HUTT ELECTORAT
MR. NASH SPEAKS
Mr. W. Nash, M.P., addressed a wellattended meeting of Lower Hutt electors in the King George Concert Hall last evening, when he gave a general survey of the administration and legislation of the Government during the past four years. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews) presided.
Strong criticism of the failure of the Government to provide milk for school children was.made by Mr. Nash. "In spite ol the fact that representations were made to the Government early in the present year, with a detailed plan for the cai'rying out of the scheme [through the Dominion, and with proposals for contributions by various organisations and individuals, the Government has apparently done nothing until the eve of the election, when £3000 was placed on the esitmates," said Mr. Nash. The value of milk, he said, was now being stressed by all medical authorities and distribution through the schools in Britain was being carried out by an agreement between the Government and the milk marketing boards.
Mr. Nash told how a citizen of Lower Hutt was spending £165 a year so that the children of Handwick School should each receive a half-pint of milk per day; but such gifts should not be necessary, he said. The headmaster of Randwick School had said that the children stood up better and responded to the teaching better than they had done before.
Mr. Nash was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
