COMMERCE CHAMBERS

CONFERENCE AT NAPIER

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

NAPIER, This Day

The annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand was opened at Napier this morning. A welcome was extended to delegates by the Mayor of Napier, Mr. C. O. Morse, followed by a brief address by the chairman of the Napier Chamber, Mr. L. C. Bolls. A comprehensive address was delivered by the president of the Associated Chambers, Mr. A. H. Allen, of Dunedin, in which he touched upon the majority of the problems facing the Dominion. He stressed the need for greater international trade, as opposed to the trend to national isolation, and urged the resumption of the gold standard and reduction of land values in the Dominion, with cessation of speculation and trafficking in farm lands. Delegates to the conference number about fifty and were addressed this afternoon by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes), who arrived at one o'clock by special train from Wellington. The conference will extend over two days.
