Special forecast, for Wellington:—
South-easterly winds which will be strong or ot gale force. Weather cold and boisterous with further rain and heavy falls at times, but conditions moderating tomorrow. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for northerly winds to the north of Kawhia and Gisborne, but a change to southerlies tonight. Elsewhere moderate to strong south-easterly to southerly winds will prevail, gale force being reached in many places from Cook Strait northward. The weather will be cloudy and unsettled generally, and stormy about and to the north of Cook Strait. Further rain is probable in most districts, with heavy falls and flooding in the North -Island. Temperatures will be cold, and snow may ti expected on some of the ranges. On the West Coast of the South Island, however, the weather should be mainly fair. ... . : \ ' Yesterday's depression passed away eastward last night,-'but ■unfortunately a new and fairly intense cyclone has since moved from, the north-west on to the North Island, its centre this morning lying to the west of the Auckland peninsula. Southerly winds extended last night over the greater part of the Dominion, but' owing to the-approach of , the ■ cyclone mentioned above northerlies have started to blow in the northern portion of the North Island. The weather has been unsettled and squally with fairly general rain. There have been some heavy downpours in places, especially in the western areas of the North Island. The southerly change has brought colder temperatures and snow has fallen on a few of the South Island ranges. In Otago and Westland an improvement in . the weather was in evidence this morning. Auckland had dull and threatening weather yesterday with a moderate westerly wind. Some rain fell there last night, and this morning it was showery with a fresh north-easterly wind. Wellington's weather was unsettled. In the morning a strong north-westerly prevailed, but this gradually decreased and about 2 p.m. a moderate southerly came up. The weather thereafter was thick, misty, and wet, and there were further occasional showers during the night. Steady rain set in at 8.15 a.m. today, the southerly then freshenin" The rainfall, recorded at Kel'burn up to 9 a.m. totalled 22 points, and in Lower Hutt 26 points. - Christchurch had dull weather with a south-westerly breeze. Some rain fell during the morning, and there was a drizzle at midnight, the total fall being one of 19 points. By 9 ajn. today, however, it had cleared, and the weather was fair with a moderate wind from the north-east. Dunedin had a fine morning, but the afternoon was overcast. A southerly breeze prevailed, but at 9 a.m. today the wind was a light northerly and the weather was clear. •
