TAX ON WAGES

AN EMPLOYER'S ATTITUDE

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day,

A rather unusual situation was disclosed in the Feilding Magistrate's Court yesterday when Ernest Wilfred Slaughter, proprietor of a private •hotel was fined £2 and costs'for failing to pay the emergency unemployment charge on" wages. Mr. S. McDowall, Labour Department inspector, of Feilding, gave evidence that he had called on the defendant for the purpose of inspecting his books, but the defendant said that he did not keep a wages and time book and did not intend to do so, and, further said that if he had such a book he would not produce it. He further slated that he had' never collected taxes for the- Government and he did not intend to start. In regard to one of the defendant's employees whom witness, was inquiring about, the defendant told witness that he had better see this employee and collect the tax from her. Witness had endeavoured to convince the defendant that he should produce his wages book, but this he refused to do.
