CRICKET

PRELIMINARY

MATCH

ASSOCIATIONS' OPINIONS

The suggestion made by the Wellington Cricket Association that a preliminary trial match for minor association players should be played before the annual Town v. Country game, received both support and opposition in letters from minor associations which were considered at a meeting of the management committee of the association last night. Mr. P. B. Broad presided. Replying to a circular on.the matter the Southern Hawke's Bay Association supported the idea of a preliminary game provided it did not conflict witu the Hawke Cup matches or the English team's fixtures. The Wanganui Association objected to the scheme, and the Nelson Association declared that it could not see how the match could be played without interfering with the games for the Hawke Cup or against the Englishmen. . The Taranaki Association supported the proposal. It was Reported that at another conference between delegates representing the Wellington Cricket Association and the Hutt Valley Cricket Association, matters-bearing on the cjuestion of amalgamation had been discussed. The position now was that the Hutt Valley Association would discuss whether it would amalgamate, and advise the Wellington Association when it had reached a decision. ■; Mr. A. M. Ongley, of Palmerston North, was appointed selector of the country team. The secretary was instructed to write to him suggesting that he should endeavour to have the preliminary game played by December ; 15, and also notifying him that it was proposed to play the Town v. Country match at Christmas time. The chairman stated that owing to business reasons he would be unable to represent the association at the biannual conference of-the New Zealand Cricket Council. Mr. J. H. Phillips was appointed lo represent the association. He stated, however,' that his acceptance would be subject to, his being able to make the necessary business arrangements. Messrs: li. J. Brabin, P. G. Rice, and A. 'Ronaldson were appointed as the junior selection committee.
