VICTORIA LEAGUE EFFORT
Beautiful flowers which came from Mrs. G. Chapman's garden at Lower Hutt decorated the Pioneer Club rooms yesterday afternoon when the Victoria League's annual book tea and social took place. There was a remarkable response to the appeal for books and magazines to backblock settlers and hospitals. Mrs. J. A. Doctor, acting president, read the annual report, in which the deaths were recorded with regret of Sir Henry Buckleton, Sir James Coates, Mrs. McEldowney, Mrs. Meadowcroft, Mrs. Ivan Levy, and Miss Harris. Tribute was paid to the memory of each. The report stated that, in company with other Empire societies, the Victoria League was privileged to present to his Majesty the 20,000 shilling Jubilee gift. A copy of his Majesty's gracious letter of thanks had been received. Reference was also made to the visit of the Duke of Gloucester, the farewell to Lady Bledisloe, the usual contribution sent towards the Empire wreath for Queen Victoria's statue, and the placing of a wreath on
