NEW PARTIES
"AMBITIOUS PAWNS"
Criticism of the birth and entry into the political field of new parties just before' election time was made by Mr. P. M. i Butler, Labour candidate for Wellington Suburbs, at his meeting at Mornington last night. "There has sprung up in the political life of this country a weed which savours of American Tammanyism," said Mr. Butler. "We have seen the creation of new parties every election. These parties have no roots -in the social ;life of the people and are the creation of cunning men who make catspaws of ambitious pawns and gamble with the destinies of the nation in an unscrupulous and sordid manner. This must cease. The Labour Party on- assuming office will enact legislation j making it compulsory for the names, and amounts of all contributors and contributions to political party funds to be made public. The Labour Party do that now and publish weekly' the names of those who can afford to j contribute to its funds. All other parties have refused to do so and have I combated legal action in this regard. I therefore appeal to the public to profit by past experience and not to trust or be misled by specious promises or be frightened by bogy-men."
