ANIMAL FATS PROBLEM

STATE, OF AGRICULTURE

'Evening Post," October 30.

The International Commission of Agriculture (International Union of Agricultural Associations) recently held its general • assembly at Brussels and Gembloux, Belgium, under the chairmanship of Marquis de Vogue, France. There were present 110 delegates, representing 53 agricultural organisations, as well as representatives of the Belgian Ministry of Agriculture, the League of Nations, the International Labour Office, the International Institute of Agriculture, and the International Co-operative .Alliance. The Special Commission for Agricultural Co-operation and the Special Commission for Agricultural Labour gathered at the same time. The agenda paper contained the following subjects for discussion—Organisation of agricultural production under planned economy; the edible fats problem; and limitation of pig breeding and fattening (especially attempts made in Denmark and Holland). Detailed reports were presented on these three questions. The Commission passed resolutions (1) on the edible fats problem; (2) one on the recent publication of the League of Nations anent agricultural protectionism; and (3) the scheme to set up a permanent agricultural commission at the International Organisation of Labour. , The assembly devoted special attention to ..the present condition of'agriculture,.'lt came to the conclusion that in spite: of the fact that useful measures had been iaken in several countries since 1932, the condition of agriculture had still grown worse. Therefore the Commission adopted a declaration insisting upon the different requests of its.Lausanne declaration and setting up nev? proposals. The Commission stated that it: was convinced that the two main problems to be solved in order to overcome the agricultural crisis are the wheat problem and the edible fats problem. On the one side the London Wheat Agreement (1933) should be prolonged and improved, on the other the.older civilised countries should1 take, measures to improve the existing methods in order to prevent consumption of tropical fats and whale oil to handicap the normal production and consumption of butter and lard. .• ■. , ■■ : ■ The declaration also laid stress on the necessity of improving prices of agricultural produce, reducing' the cost of production, and increasing .consumption. ..... The International Commission of Agriculture will, hold its next meeting, 1936, in Oslo (Norway). It decided'that the 17th International Congress of Agriculture-should take place at The Hague in 1937..
