The theft of £17 from a man who had given him the money to deposit in the bank, was responsible lor the, ai> pearance of Patrick Delaney, a mech« anical engineer, aged 37, before Mr. E. D. Sfosley,- S.M., in the Magistrate's Court .today. He was charged with stealing £17, the property, of Lawrence Foster Martin, at Greymouth on September 16. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was convicted and ordered to come up-for sentence if called upon within 12 months. He was represented by Mr. F. W. Ongley. Detective-Sergeant.L. B. Revell said that in September the accused was in hospital, and became acquainted with, another patient. Martin had an account, at the Commercial Bank • in. Greymouth. On September 16 he handed the 'accused the sum of £17 and a deposit slip. Delaney did not bank this money and left Greymouth for Wellington. Later he made a statement to the police to the effect that when he was about to deposit the money he was taken ill, and had to stay in bed for a week. The money was used to come up to Wellington. The Detective-Sergeant added that the accused had gone to hospital when he arrived in Wellington. He came out yesterday, and was arrested. In the meantime his mother had made full restitution of the money. He had not been bpfore the Court previously.
