SOME EARLY DEPARTURES

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

■ CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The first of the Riccartoh. horses for Trentham left last evening. . H. Cutts took Fracas, Slasher, Wild Chase, and Paper Slipper; T. H. Gillett, Greek Shepherd and Pelmet; and P. V. Mason Variant and Hostis. The remainder of the Riccarton trainers, including Mrs. J. Campbell, F. D. Jones, F. Christmas, C. McCarthy, S. Barr, A. S. Ellis, and T. Smith, will go north tomorrow night. . " . The conditions were, ideal' for the galloping yesterday morning, when the outside of the course proper, the No. 7 grass, and the plough were available. On the course prbper'Fair Weather and Grey Honour were practically together at the end of five furlongs in lmin 2 l-ssec, the iast half-mile in 49 3-ssec. Vintage ran a mile by himself, taking 50sec for the first half and 52 4-ssec for the second half, a pleasing piece of work. On the plough Fracas, Paper Slipper, and Wild Chase did only half-pace work, and Slasher cantered. The rest of the work was on the No. 7 grass track. The two-year-olds Kow Tow and Cerne Abbas ran half a mile nicely in 49 2-ssec. Greek Shepherd was going better than Sky Pilot at the end of six furlongs in lmin 16 l-ssec. ; Pelmet had Dover Patrol as a mate for half a mile in 49sec. Bon Tray, after doing three furlongs in 35 l-ssec, completed six in lmin 14 l-ssec. Knockfin registered lmin 2sec for five furlongs. Wino had Nocturnus as a mate for seven furlongs, run in lmin 30sec. Argentic and Haeretonu were going easily to run six furlongs in lmin 21sec. THE DEATH OF THANE Thane, owned by Mr. J. S. McLeod, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, was accidentally killed while training at Greenmeadows on Saturday. He was an acceptor for the Rimutaka Hack Handicap on Saturday. ; MO FURTHER SCRATCH INGS Up till 2 p.m. today there had been no further official scratchings for the Wellington Meeting. According to an Auckland message, however, Queen's Choice will not make the trip, and Thane's death will remove him from the fields. ' BACK FEOF SYDNEY REST OF GEORGE'S TEAM The Trentham trainer T. R. George, accompanied by Mrs.-George, "arrived back from Sydney on the Wanganella this morning with the three remaining members of his team—Wotan, Debham, and Debut. Also on board was Silver Ring, who returned in charge of his owner (Mr. A.H. Walton), and a yearling colt. The passengers included ! Messrs. C. Gomer (the chief stipendiary steward, ■ who has been on leave of absence), T. A. Smith (part-owner of Wotan, etc.), J. M. Cameron (who left Gold Trail behind to be mated with Pantheon), H. E. Russell (who sold Golden Chance in Sydney and had returned Golden Treasure earlier), and W. J. Pascoe. ■ ■... ': . ~ Referring to the-trip, George stated that it had been dogged by ill luck from the start. Debham and Le Grand were the only horses not to suffer setbacks, but Debham' had not been up to the company and Le Grand had proved a rogue. Wotan had begun to pick up just before the end, but he now doubted whether the colt would regain his true form till the auturiV, and it-is likely that he will be given a short spell. He was unable to say much about his arrangements for the Wellington Meeting till he had seen the horses, but he considered it likely that Cricket would run in the Wellesley Stakes and Deficit in the Taita, and that it was doubtful if Princess Doreen would be a starter onthe first day. "' Mr. Walton said that Silver Ring had not 'done well after his trip across' to Sydney, but he. also had begun to improve during the last few weeks, though his.weights were.too solid for him at Randwick. 'Silver Ring will definitely not be a runner in the New Zealand Cup, but he may be started on the final days of the Cup Meeting. The horse had a good trip in contrast to the trip over to Sydney. Mr. Walton also mentioned that the trainer R. W. King had decided to settle permanently in Sydney, and he had three horses in his team- at present and would be receiving a Rampion colt shortly from the Dominion. Scratchmere Scar's'breakdown was unfortunate, as he had grown into a finelooking horse and would have been very hard to beat in a race such as the Metropolitan. His case is not very hopeful, but he has been blistered, and if he does become sound again he is likely to win some good races. N.Z. CUP SCRATCHING (By Telegraph—Press Association.)
