General Sir Gynl John Deverell General Officer Commanding the East crn Command in Britain since 1933, was born in 1874 and became a secondlieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment in 1895. He was adjutant of the Ist Battalion by 1903 and in 1907 passed through the Imperial Staff College and was sent to India, where he was promoted brigade major. In 1913-14 he was on the Indian General Staff, and in 1914-15 he was a brigade major with the British Expeditionary Force in France. In 1915 he was given command of his regiment, and he got his brigade in the same year. By August, 1916, he was commanding a Division (the. Third), and after-the war led the Northern Division of the Army of the Rhine. In 1919 he was promoted major-general and given command of the Welsh Division. Later he was Quartermaster-General in India, where he also commanded the United Provinces district,, and in 1928 he became a lieutenant-general. In 1930-31 he was Chief of the General Staff in India and then returned to take over the British Western Command. In 1933 he was : made a general- and transferred to the ! Eastern Command. He was knighted !in 1926.
