SEASON'S COMPETITIONS COMMENCED

FINE CENTURY BY MILLER

Ihc local cricket season was commenced officially on Saturday alternoon, the players being favoured with good weather for the occasion. The influence of a strong northerly wind was felt, but the form shown in all departments of the game was quite promising. Among the batsmen to get going was Miller (a player from OtagoJ, who gained the distinction of making the first century of the season. His splendid 148 contributed largely to a notable opening performance by , Midland, who took full advantage of the opportunity given them by Hutt of having the first strike. Osborn was another to contribute well to Midland's account. The Wellington and Wellington College Old Boys teams met at the Basin Reserve, and the newly-situated wicket was more in the interests of the game than in having players cramped near the fence. Wellington had the better of play, Meech (with the ball) and Whyte (with the bat) bein« the principal performers. Ward showed a strong hand with the bailor Kilb.irme, who, however, encountered strong opposition from University, the position of the game being very open when stumps were drawn. Karori's debut in senior cricket was made against i-'etone. Duffy did best with the bat in a low-scoring match, and Mac Donald quickly collected three Petone wickets when the suburban team took strike late in the day.
