CARBINE MEMORIES
FIRST SIGHT OF SNOW
,: Garbine forms the subject of the following interesting. passage in "Memories," byv the Duke,:of Portland, who purchased hinifor 13500g5.. During his first-winter in England there was a very heavy fall of enow, the like of which- Carbine, had" never seen in Australia. He was always ridden. at exercise by Jack Cunningham, who came over with him, and he was saddled and bridled in his box. When the door was •. opened arid Carbine saw the snow he came to the door and pawed it with both feet Then he smelt it, shook his head, and refused absolutely to go but of his box. After waiting a few minutes Cunningham said to him: "Well, you old fool! If you won't come out, you can jolly well stay at home!" Next morning much the same thing happened again: the horse pawed, the snow, smelt it, and finally took a mouthfuL Then he bounded out of his box and rolled for nearly five minutes in the middle of the yard. ■
He could "AQt • bear to get his ears wet,, but once when he was being saddled and bridled to run for the Melbourne Cup it began to rain. For some time he refused to go out of his box, 50..-in desperation, his trainer,: Higginbbtham, putupan umbrella and walked to: the starting-post, carrying this over the horse's head. Wher* he | was at the starting-post with the | other horses; he paid no further attenitipri to:the wet, however—-and he won the race. In consequence of this idiosyncrasy Higgihbothara had a leather [protector made like a small umbrella I which he attached to the bridle, so that rain could not fall on Carbine's ears, and this, contraption was sent to Welbeck with.him.-lie did not mind rain on his body, but could not bear it on..his ears.:: ■..' . ■ •
