MELBOURNE," October 13. The weather was showery, but there was a good attendance for the races at Caulfield.
Brilliant Sun had a comfortable win in the Orby Hurdles. He was a failure in the. early stages of his career, but has now registered four wins and a third in iive starts. The New Zea-land-bred Calydon, who was second, made his best Australian effort to date.
Sir Geraint, bred by his owners, was prominent always, but had .a lucky win in the Debutant Stakes for colts from Gilded Youth, who finished brilliantly. The early leader, Borneo, was a promising third, and the New Zealander, Martinborough, sixth. Lady Mauve compensated her owner, A. Crofts, for Gilded Youth's defeat, by capturing the Debutante Stakes for fillies by a lucky run on the rails, she cost 350 guineas as a yearling. Her trainer, Hoysted, won the race last year with Matinee.
Feldspar finished brilliantly to beat the: pacemaker, Charles Fox, and Marabpu in the- Caulfleld Stakes. Syna-. gogue was interfered with near the post, but was beaten at the time. However, he may have secured third place. Young Idea finished brilliantly to win the Guineas. His trainer,1 F. Foulsham, scored previously with Liberal and Avant Courier, Garrio continued his Unlucky run of seconds. The Trump finished fast to beat Carnarvon for third. The early leader, Hadrian, was last home, and Valiant Chief was never a possibility. '• A. Eeed, rider of the winner, won 'previously on Balmerino and Green wave.
Red Ray finished strongly to defeat Yarramba, who ■ also finished well, in the Herbert Power Stakes. Panto;s third was a great effort, and he should appreciate an'lllb drop in the Caui.' field Cup. ■•■• Greenhorn finished well, but Cape Morn faded out. \
There was a wonderful finish in th« Toorak Handicap. Journal and Ept gram raced together for the last half furlong. Epigram's form was an irn provement on his effort at Kyneton or Wednesday, when he ran unplaced ir a weak field. Journal was third ir the Toorak Handicap last year. Results:—
